NEW SMALL BUSINESS MEMBER – FALLON DASEY

For a country of just 10 million people, Sweden has an extraordinarily large number of successful industrial companies. Fallon Dasey is an Australian creative agency with a focus on helping Swedish businesses communicate their messages worldwide.

Based at Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches, the agency produces creative content including films, customer stories, reports and brochures for Swedish corporates and their Australian subsidiaries. Fallon Dasey’s team members are a mix of Australians and Swedes. The business’s direct customers include Sandvik Australia, Saab Australia, Saab Group and Skanska. Via partner agencies, the team produces content for Swedish businesses including SKF, Trelleborg, Axel Johnson, Atlas Copco and more.

Fallon Dasey was founded by Daniel Dasey a former Sydney Morning Herald editor. Daniel lived with his Swedish wife, Karin, and young family in Stockholm from 2012 and 2015. He worked on staff for two large Swedish content agencies, producing content for clients ranging from Scania and Ericsson to ABB, IKEA, ASSA ABLOY and Elekta. Daniel was seriously impressed by the efficiency and innovation shown by Swedish companies, as well as their commitment to high values and diversity.

When the family returned to Australia in 2015, Daniel was keen to replicate the Swedish content agency model here. Fallon Dasey initially just offered writing services. But the offering was substantially widened in 2019. The business now provides services including photography, filmmaking, Swedish-to-English translation, graphic design, web design, advertising campaign production, annual report production, magazine production and social media management.

The 2022 financial year is proving especially busy and the Fallon Dasey agency has been working on content for global websites, SEO projects and annual reports. However, our network of creative professionals is also expanding meaning we have the capacity to take on new clients and deliver a wider range of services to existing customers.

NEW SMALL BUSINESS MEMBER – KMSI – Celemi Solution Provider

KMSI Pty Ltd – a long-standing local provider of Celemi business simulations.

Celemi is a Swedish company based in Malmö, founded through the genius of Klas Melander who was able to develop a common thread of learning to form the basis of how business and people’s roles and responsibilities contribute to value creation and change.   The programs generate an experiential, quick, and fun way to ‘get everyone on the same page’ for engagement in change linked to strategic initiatives and leadership development.  Many say it is like going through an MBA in a few days.  Celemi’s go to market model is based on developing solution providers who provide local knowledge and experience.  Celemi is represented in over 70 countries.

KMSI is celebrating its 30th year in association with delivering business simulations and Celemi, first as a client with Hitachi and since 1998 as a solution provider. KMSI’s expertise in developing and aligning business acumen to engage and promote greater return on investments.  This year we will be extending this into the new area of sustainability.  KMSI is based in Sydney and has delivered programs throughout Australia and Asia Pacific for clients.  KMSI was formed in 1998 by an executive director, Rob Wells, that was so impressed with value experienced from the Celemi simulations, he forged the local market and assisted in the local delivery for global clients.  The Australian market is important as many global clients utilise Australia as a test market for competitive influences and value creation, which if articulated properly can demonstrate how Swedish innovation can play out globally.  KMSI is keen to demonstrate how global innovation can be paired with local expertise to add value and local context.

The basis of the simulations are experiential games, originally board-based, but due to the pandemic have been migrating to a digital format.  Clients still have the luxury of selecting a blend if needed.  Games range from engaging ‘finance for everyone’ with a game called Apples & Oranges to complex scenario planning linked to your value chain to experience and practice change.  Return on Investments come from enhanced planning, execution, and improved leadership in initiatives.  KMSI has experience from small to large organisations including simulating M&A’s across all industries.

We are excited that this year a simulation will include engaging dynamic strategies of sustainability. Combining the program with mapping the strategy with KMSI’s maturity analysis framework which can be extended to the entire supply chain can further engage stakeholders throughout the organisation.

THE SWEDISH BUSINESS IN AUSTRALIA AWARD WINNERS 2021

The winners and runner ups of the 2021 business awards were announced virtually and we are delighted to announce that they will be presented on stage and celebrated at the Swedish Australian Innovation Technology and Design Summit on 16 March 2022. Four inspirational companies – newcomers as well as established – won the 2021 Awards, showcasing the successful Sweden–Australia business connection.

The Awards provide a great platform for companies to showcase their business within the Swedish-Australian business community. These awards also offer a great opportunity for companies to be recognised at a state as well as national level for being a business leader in its field or have specific expertise and of course, these awards offer everyone participating, invaluable promotional opportunities. The Swedish Australian Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1911 and we feel very proud of celebrating 110 years of dedication to create, promote, add value and support a sustainable Swedish-Australian business network.

The awards are run on a non-profit basis and promote Swedish related business activities in Australia as well as recognising organisations and individuals that help give Swedish business in Australia a positive profile.

The entries for the 2021 year’s awards according to the jury panel were of very high and equal quality, which made the evaluation process very hard but after careful screening of the different nominations, the result within the four different categories was decided and announced as follows.

Excellence in Business Enterprise

This award was open to all Swedish or Swedish-Australian businesses; large or small, newcomer or established. Here we highlight businesses or organisations that have achieved outstanding results through initiatives that demonstrate excellence in business management, a significant project, implementing progressive sustainability strategy, innovative campaign or product, marketing/branding or a new enterprise launch.

The Excellence in Business Enterprise Award for 2021 was granted to Ericsson Australia with Husqvarna and Randek as runner ups.

Ericsson Australia has been integral in evolving Australia’s telecommunications industry through the development of innovative technologies and solutions. From the first public telephone system in 1959 to the first 5G network in the Southern Hemisphere in 2020, Ericsson has partnered with operators to cement Australia as a global technology leader. Just in the last 18 months, Ericsson has helped connect over 3 million customers to 5G and is collaborating with partners to evolve 5G networks as a platform for innovation to support Australia’s digital future.

Ericsson’s Managing Director Australia and New Zealand says: “I’m thrilled that Ericsson has been presented with the Excellence in Business Enterprise award at the 2021 Swedish Australian Chamber of Commerce Swedish Business in Australia Awards.

First established in 1876 in Stockholm, we are proud of our Swedish heritage. Our technology innovation has positioned Australia as one of the global leaders in 5G, but it is the imprint of the founder, Lars Magnus Ericsson, who believed access to communication is a basic human right, that remains unmistakable to this day.

In 130 plus years, Ericsson Australia has grown from sales and repair shops to a household name, helping to create sustainable change and transforming nearly every sector of society. Whether it be the launch of Australia’s first public telephone system, or supporting the roll-out of the Southern Hemisphere’s first 5G network, Ericsson has placed the Swedish innovation at the very heart of Australia’s telco industry and ensured that Australia is at the cutting edge of technology.” www.ericsson.com/en

As many Swedish organisations are advanced in this area it was difficult for the jury to select a winner within this category with the impressive runner up companies, Alfa Laval and Axis Communications.

The Excellence in Sustainability Award for 2021 was awarded to AstraZeneca Australia. AstraZeneca is part of the global science-led biopharmaceutical company and is engaged in the research, development, manufacture and supply of medicines, that are committed to making a real difference to the lives of Australians.

Two main sustainability initiatives stood out for the jury: “Their decision to provide a COVID vaccine to protect all people at cost and no profit during the pandemic period; and initiating the largest private greening venture in Australia (with Greening Australia), planting 25 million trees to recover native growth following the bushfires 2019-20”. AstraZeneca Australia integrated sustainability into every aspect of their enterprise, going beyond meeting annual and longer-term targets, to evolving a mindset and practices to meet changing and challenging times, well beyond their core business. www.astrazeneca.com.au

SACC Perth WA Member News – Deal to uncork Swedish wine market

Swedish-Australian company and SACC Perth WA Member helping to boost the WA wine export at the same time entering a new sophisticated market.
Western Australia’s wine exports to Europe are set for a major boost after a supply deal to ship 70,000 litres to Sweden. SACC Perth WA Member Atientic Group is exporting 93,333 bottles of MadFish Chardonnay in the December quarter.

It’s a substantial lift in European market exposure, the company says, because it represents 47 per cent of all WA white wine sent to the continent in 2020, about 147,000L.

Wine Australia data shows substantial growth in WA’s wine exports to European markets in the 2021 financial year, with a 24 per cent increase in all wines shipped to the UK, at 2 million litres.

Volumes to Finland increased 8 per cent to 136,000L, and exports to Sweden rose 144 per cent to 69,000L. Sweden’s alcohol market is also unusual in that the government has a monopoly retailer, Systembolaget, which has 420 outlets across the Scandinavian country.

Atientic founder Hamoun Aria told Business News he had hoped to expose the state’s wine industry in Scandinavian markets and believed it would compete favourably with other Australian states.

“The biggest share of Australian wine in Sweden is from South Australia,” Mr Aria said. “Everyone knows a WA wine is a premium wine.

“Sweden previously has never been able to understand the capacity and capability of WA’s wine industry.” It’s not an easy market to crack, however, given the licensing requirements to sell to the government’s retailer. The move comes after tension with China has caused a dramatic reduction in wine shipments to a traditionally massive market for WA and Australia. “As the wine-producing community in Western Australia face the realities of signicantly decreased opportunities in the Chinese market and restricted international tourism due to the pandemic, (Atientic trading as Ecope International) is doing its part to support local businesses enter new markets,” Mr Aria said. “As wine enthusiasts, our business understands the passion that goes into the premium wine produced in Australia. “Our goal is to help bring that passion to international export markets so that overseas consumers and the WA producers and the industry benets.”

Mr Aria was born in Iran, grew up in Sweden, and now lives in WA. During his time in Sweden, he gained experience in commercial shipping and trade, but came to Perth in 2020 with his family, studying an MBA and hoping to start a business. All of that gave him perhaps a unique link to Sweden. “I’ve spent almost 18 years of my life (in Sweden), I started high school in Sweden, I migrated to Sweden from Iran,” he said. “I am speaking the same language, I understand business in Sweden. “That has helped me a lot.” Atientic has a further Swedish export move in progress, with a winery from the Great Southern region.

SACC YP Business Mentorship Program Launch

On the 16th of September, SACC and YP launched the 2021/2022 Business Mentorship Program. 14 mentors and mentees came together in an online kick-off event where each pair had the opportunity to meet for the very first time to start forming their relationships and together plan for what they would like their journey to look like over the next 12 months.

We are excited to see so many mentors and mentees joining this year’s program. We look forward to following and supporting each participant’s growth throughout the program.

If you are interested in joining as a mentor or mentee, it’s not too late! Please express your interest through the following link https://www.swedishchamber.com.au/sacc-yp-business-mentorship-program-2/

Feedback from previous year’s program:

Mentee: “I gained a whole lot from the relationship with my mentor! Not only did my mentor help guiding me in my career path, but also acted as a coach and helped me grow on an individual level as well as on a professional. My mentor’s personality, extensive work experience and knowledge was exactly what I needed in a mentor at that point in time. It was a great match. My main goal with the mentorship program was to establish the next steps in my career path, which we did. Not only did I enjoy the progress we made from our monthly meetings which helped me in my career, but I also really enjoyed speaking with my mentor about his life journey. I would definitely recommend the program to others.”

Mentor: ”Being a Mentor gave me a great sense of “value”. I was able to share my business and life experience gained from various positions during a lifelong career and apply this to the challenges of the Mentee. I think we achieved a lot together by identifying the key areas and specific actions which would support my Mentee’s development. I would absolutely recommend this program and will be partaking in the upcoming program.”

If you would like to find out more about the mentorship program please contact YP Committee Chair Therese Nithenius or SACC General Manager Camilla Jennings.
